“We hold these truth to be self evident: That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
The founders acknowledged God as the Creator, the Giver of life, and the Giver of rights. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson rightly reasoned that there are certain self evident truths which are most important and vital to build a great nation upon. The first self evident truth recognized that all men are created in the image of God. This gives all men equal value regardless of who they are. Jefferson listed the top three God-given rights in their order of importance:
• Life
• Liberty
• Pursuit of happiness
What good is liberty without life? And what good is the right to pursue your own destiny without liberty? The overriding principle he recognized was that if the crown or the state or society gave us our rights and value then they could also take them away. Man has God-given rights and value.
